The Mark H. Zangmeister Center to Sponsor Free Skin Cancer Screenings
May is Melanoma Awareness/Prevention Month
(Columbus, Ohio) April 29, 2009 – The Mark H. Zangmeister Center, a leading central Ohio oncology and hematology care center, is hosting a free skin cancer screening event on Tuesday, May 19 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. The event will be held at The Zangmeister Center at 3100 Plaza Properties Blvd. in Columbus. Screenings will be conducted by Zangmeister Center staff and Eastside Dermatology & Skin Care Center’s dermatologists.
More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. The most serious type of skin cancer – Melanoma – will kill nearly 8,420.
Early detection is critical to curing most forms of skin cancer but, according to a recent survey by the American Academy of Dermatology, most Americans don’t know the warning signs of Melanoma and only about a third eve know what Melanoma is. The survey also found that fewer than one-third examine their skin for signs of skin cancer.
May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, as designated by the AAD. Each year, the first Monday of the month is designated “Melanoma Monday.” This year Melanoma Monday is May 5.
“Most skin cancers can be successfully treated if detected early,” said Dr. Mark Thompson, president and managing partner of The Zangmeister Center. “It’s important that everyone, no matter what skin type, has yearly screenings. We’re pleased to offer this prevention service to our community.”
Appointments are required for the free screening service and will last approximately 10 minutes. To register for a free screening on May 19, please call The Zangmeister Center at 614-383-6230.
